US&R (URBAN SEARCH & RESCUE)
The Saxton Volunteer Fire Company is the sponsoring agency and home to PA Company 5 Urban Search & Rescue Team. This specialized team is trained to respond in the event of natural and man-made disasters. Such disasters could include hurricanes, blizzards, collapsed buildings, cars into building, acts of terror or other large-scale incidents requiring specialized equipment and training. PA Company 5 is one of 8 regional elements of PA Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) Taskforce 2. The team is comprised of 35 members with specialized training and certification in technical search & rescue operations. The team includes Team Leaders, Rescue Specialists, Tech Search Specialist, Medical Specialists, Hazardous Materials Specialists, Structural Engineers and support personnel. They have specialized search cameras, listening devices, concrete cutting, breaching and breaking tools, pneumatic shoring (lifting and stabilizing equipment), confined space equipment, and ropes & rigging equipment. Urban Search & Rescue involves the location, rescue and medical stabilization of individuals trapped in confined spaces following structural collapse, transportation accidents, mines, and collapsed trenches. The team is considered a multi-hazard discipline as it is needed for a variety of emergencies or disasters, including storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, technological accidents, terrorist activities and CBRNE Incidents (Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear and Explosives). The team must train and exercise regularly and ready for deployment whenever needed. The team is also available as a regional technical rescue team for deployment throughout the eight counties of the South Central Mountain Regional Taskforce. It can be requested for deployment through Bedford County 911.
