LAST CALL OF THE YEAR IS FOR TREES & WIRES

DOWN ON BRANCH STREET

 

Dec 31st - Continued Heavy winds brought down even more trees and wires on New Years Eve day. The final call of 2008 was for large pine trees down on electrical wires on Branch Street in Saxton Borough. Rescue 35 with Assistant Chief 35-3 found the wires to be live and called Penelec to the scene to handle the problem and ordered 15 Fire Police units to close the street to traffic until the situation was brought under control. Rescue 35 was back in quarters and ready at 15:50 hours.

 


FIRST DUE WORKING GARAGE FIRE

 

Dec 31st - The 35-01 Box was hit out for a working garage fire on Luther Lane in East Saxton on Wednesday at 12:11 hours. Assistant Chief 35-3 arrived on scene with a well off garage with exposures on both sides. Strong winds fanned the fire taking conditions to nearly fully involved upon the arrival of Engine 35. Crews were faced with nearly zero viability as they began their defensive attack but managed to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes. Engine 35 was the attack wagon supplied by Tanker 35. Wagon 36 laid 5 inch supply line from the scene to Figard Road supplying water from Tankers 36, 17 & 3. All other apparatus due on the box was staged and their manpower brought to the scene to assist with attack and overhaul. Ambulance 16 handled EMS stand-by as both 15 units were out on other calls. Engine 3 stood by in the 35 house. The box was placed back into service at 14:03 hours.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


HEAVY WINDS BRING TREES DOWN IN TODD TWP.

 

Dec 31st - Company 35 was called out for trees and wires down on the Little Valley Road at 09:25 hours on Wednesday. Penn Dot arrived on the scene and cleared the scene prior to the arrival of the fire department. The box was placed back into service at 09:38 hours.

 


ENGINE TRANSFERS TO STATION 12

 

Dec 24th - Engine 35 was called for a transfer to Three Springs Station while they were working a house fire in Satillo Borough at 09:25 hours. The crew was placed back into service at 09:58 hours.

 


RESCUE & FIRE POLICE CALLED TO CLOSE ROUTE 164

DUE TO DANGEROUS ICY CONDITIONS

 

Dec 24th - Snow and ice made travel on the Cove Mountain portion of Route 164 nearly impassible so Penn Dot requested Company 35 and Blair County Company 80 to close the mountain until that could improve the conditions with salt and cinders. Units were released at 07:00 hours.

 


HORSE RESCUE AT OLD BEDFORD VILLAGE

 

Dec 20th - Rescue 35 was dispatched at 16:27 hours on a frigid Saturday evening to assist the Bedford County Animal Rescue team with a horse down at Old Bedford Village. The rescue crew set Air Shores to the support the wooden beams in the barn where the hoist was attached for the lifting operation that entailed getting the two thousand pound horse back up on its feet. Air bags were deployed to assist with raising the animal enough to get the lifting harness on. Both teams then worked to get the animal up and stabilized so it could be evaluated by the vet. The call ended at 20:27 hours.

 


PUBLIC SERVICE CALL ON BRANCH STREET

 

Dec 19th - Company 35 was called out to 919 Branch Street for water in a basement after heavy rains. Tanker 35's crew worked for 1.5 hours to clear the water from the home and were back in service at 16:02 hours.

 


MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT IN LINCOLN TWP

 

Dec 16th - Just as 35 units were going back in service from the Dudley accident they got hit out for another accident on Route 26 in Lincoln Township assisting Company 3. While in route the dispatch center reported a second accident near the same location as the first one. Deputy Chief 3 assigned Chief 35 & Rescue 35 to the first accident and Company 3 under his direction handled the second crash. The accidents were less than one quarter mile apart.  Chief 35 arrived on scene of the first crash with one care down over an embankment and into a tree. No extrication was required. The crew from Rescue 35 assisted with patient packaging and removal. Ambulance 15 transported the patient to JC Blair Hospital. Apparatus from both 3 and 35 remained on scene until the towing service and Pa State Police arrived. Deputy Chief 3 placed the dual box back into service at 18:14 hours.

 


SNOWY ROADS CAUSE TWO CAR MVA IN DUDLEY

 

Dec 16th - Rescue 35, Rescue 17 and Ambulances 15 and 17 were dispatched for a two vehicle accident on Broad Top Mountain Road near Dudley on Tuesday afternoon at 15:30 hours. Chief 17 arrived on scene with a minor accident involving two vehicles blocking the east bound lane.  He placed Rescue 17 available. Rescue 35’s crew used a hydraulic rescue tool to force open the passenger door and assisted with patient packaging and removal. One of the drivers was transported to Nason Hospital and all other occupants refused transport after EMS assessment. Fire police were assigned to traffic control until the arrival of PSP and the box was placed back into service at 16:10 hours.

 


RESCUE 35 & FIRE POLICE CALLED FOR WIRES DOWN

ON RAYSTOWN ROAD

 

Dec 15th - A truck brought down telephone wires on the highway near 11355 Raystown Road on Monday morning at 08:08 hours. Fire Police Lieutenant 35-3 requested the units to assist with traffic control until the wires could be removed. All units were back in quarters and ready at 08:46 hours.

 


TRUCK CANCELLED ON CHIMNEY FIRE WITH CO.3

 

Dec 13th - Company 3 and Truck 35 were dispatched for a reported Chimney Fire on Plank Road in Lincoln Township at 22:32 hours on Saturday. The home owner called the 911 center back and reported the fire out. Chief 3 advised all units to hold in station until extinguishment was confirmed by Lieutenant 3. Units were released at 22:50 hours.

 


CARBON MONOXIDE CALL IN SAXTON

 

Dec 12th - Company 35 and Ambulance 15 were dispatched for a carbon monoxide problem at 1100 Norris Street at 05:54 hours on Friday. Lieutenant 35-1 was first to arrive on scene and encountered one of the residents exhibiting obvious signs of carbon monoxide exposure. EMS attended to the patient and immediately transported to JC Blair Hospital.  Firefighters were assigned to ventilate the first floor and basement of the structure. The home owner shut down the coal furnace believed to be the source of the problem. The call ended at 06:32 hours.

 


EARLY MORNING HOUSE FIRE WITH 36

 

Dec 9th - The 36-03 Box was dispatched for a working dwelling fire off Raystown Road just North of Hopewell at 02:35 hours on Tuesday. Deputy Chief 36 arrived on scene with a fully involved two story family dwelling. He assumed command announcing a defensive attack. Engine Tanker 36 was requested to drop a 5 inch line and lay up the lane and serve as the attack engine. Engine 35 was assigned as the supply engine drafting from a portable tank. Tankers 36, 35, 32 & 41 shuttled water to the scene. Rescue 36 was the fill site rig and Rescue 35 was assigned to side C for light tower operations. Truck 35 was staged. Crews from 36, 35 & 32 worked a blitz fire monitor and multiple hand lines on the exterior to extinguish the fire. Blair County Station 60 provided RIT coverage. Deputy Chief 36 released all Company 35 Apparatus at 05:22 hours. The State Police Fire Marshal was called to investigate the cause of the fire.

 


STRUCTURE FIRE WITH COMPANY 17

 

Dec 7th - A full first alarm assignment on the 17-05 box was hit out for a structure fire in Todd Township on Route 994 & Taylor Road at 20:51 on Sunday. Lieutenant 17 arrived on scene with Engine 17 and assumed command of the fully involved wood storage building fire. Engine 17 knocked the fire down and crews from 35 and 21 assisted with extinguishment and overhaul. Tankers 3, 21 & 35 provided the on scene water supply and Rescue 35 provided light tower operations. 35 apparatus was released at 21:50.

 


ROLLOVER IN PUTTSTOWN

 

Dec 4th - Company 35, Ambulance 15 & Rescue 36 were dispatched for a motor vehicle crash in Puttstown on Thursday at 17:15. Deputy Chief 35 arrived on the scene to find a car on its roof on Route 913. The Driver was out of the vehicle and exhibiting no injuries. Rescue 35 provided scene control and 35 Fire Police unit handled traffic control until the towing service arrived. The box was placed back in service at 18:31 hours.

 


DWELLING FIRE IN DUDLEY

 

Nov 26th - A full first alarm assignment on the 35-02 box was dispatched for smoke in a structure in Dudley Borough at 00:52 hours Wednesday morning. First arriving personnel who live in the vicinity radioed the 911 center and advised them there was fire and heavy smoke showing from the single family home. Chief 35 arrived to find the house charged with smoke and fire in the walls next to the chimney on the C side of the dwelling. Chief 35 assumed command and Deputy Chief 35 was assigned operations. Wagon 35 was the first apparatus to arrive and was ordered to lay a supply line off Dudley Road back to the residence and serve as the attack engine to be supplied by Engine 35. Engine 17 established the water supply for tanker shuttles if needed. Rescue 36 supplied lighting off the alley on side C. Engine crews from 35 & 36 made a quick hit on the fire with an 1&3/4 hand line. Truck 35s crew opened up the walls on the exterior and positive pressure ventilation was performed after the fire was completely extinguished. The fire was contained to just the walls around a wood burning stove with very minimal smoke or water damage. All units were back in quarters and ready at 02:32 hours. Engine 3 transferred to 35s house for standby.

 


MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON RAYSTOWN ROAD

 

Nov 24th - Company 36, Ambulance 16 and Rescue 35 were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident on Raystown Road just south of Hopewell at 14:22 hours on Monday. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find a car had sheared off a utility pole and left the roadway into a grassy field. One patient was still in the vehicle exhibiting back problems. A second patient self extricated with no apparent injuries. A Huntingdon County paramedic was among the first EMS to arrive on scene and after her assessment requested Chief 35 to try and obtain aero medical for transport. Due to weather conditions none were able to fly. Rescue 35s crew performed a door removal and assisted with patient removal. Patient was transported by Ambulance 16 with Medic 12 on board. Chief 35 released the rescue companies and held fire police units from 35 & 36 on scene until the towing service arrived. The call ended at 15:15 hours.

 


LOCAL ALARM ASSIGNMENT FORE A CHIMNEY FIRE

IN SAXTON BOROUGH

 

Nov 23rd - Company 35, Engine 17 & Rescue 36 were dispatched for a chimney fire at 612 Mifflin Street at 21:58 hours on Sunday evening. Chief 35 arrived on scene with normal conditions. He was met by the resident noting the furnace pipes to be glowing cherry red in the basement with a strong fuel oil smell throughout the house. Chief 35 assumed command and assigned Deputy Chief 35 to the interior for investigation. Deputy 35 reported fire in the oil furnace and assigned Engine 35s crew to extinguish the fire in the furnace and adjoining piping. Truck 35 was readied for roof operations but was not utilized since there was no fire in the chimney. Rescue 36 provided scene lighting and their crew assisted with a thermal imaging camera check for extension on Division 1 & 2. Engine 17 was staged during the operation. The heating system was shutdown and deemed inoperable with a recommendation for the owner to contact their heating contractor. The box was placed back into service at 22:37 hours.

 


SNOWY MORNING RESULTS IN DISPATCH FOR RESCUE 35

& FIRE POLICE FORE TRAFFIC CONTROL ON RT.64

 

Nov 21st - Heavy snow and icy conditions on Route 164 had numerous cars and trucks stranded on the mountain. Rescue 35 & 35 Fire police were called to handle traffic control until Penn Dot could clear the highway so that motorists could make it up the mountain. Crews were on scene for around 30 minutes and all units were back in quarters and available at 08:28 hours

 


TRUCK 35 WORKS CHIMNEY FIRE WITH CO.36

 

Nov 19th - Company 36 and Truck 35 were dispatched to a chimney fire in Defiance at 15:51 hours on Wednesday. 36 Command ordered the aerial raised to the roof for chimney extinguishment and cleaning. The truck crew also opened the roof around the chimney to assure there was no extension following the hot fire with the damaged liner. Truck 35 completed its assignment and reported back in quarters and ready at 17:20 hours.

 


RESCUE 35 CALLED FOR PHYSICAL RESCUE

AT CHURCH OF GOD ON 6th STREET

 

Nov 15th - At 17:19 hours Saturday, Rescue 35 was dispatched for a physical rescue involving a small child’s hand caught in a door. Deputy Chief 35 arrived at the church and found the child’s hand had been freed and placed Rescue 35 available before leaving station at 17:21 hours.

 


ANOTHER DANGEROUS PROPANE CYLINDER ON FIRE

 

Nov 15th - Company 35 was dispatched for another propane cylinder fire on Front Street at 01:17 hours Saturday. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find a 20 pound propane cylinder on fire in a grassy area off the street. The cylinder appeared to be cut from a neighboring gas grille and ignited with the valve partially opened. Engine 35 arrived and the crew used a trash line to extinguish the small fire. Fortunately rain earlier in the evening had dampened the immediate area around the fire and prevented a major grass and brush fire from occurring that could have spread and threatened and nearby structures. Local PD was on scene and the investigation into these deliberately set fires has now been escalated due to the inherent danger that could be caused by igniting this explosive gas. The call ended at 01:52 hours.

 


ROLLOVER ON ROUTE 26 NEAR RED CUT

 

Nov 13th - Company 35 & Ambulance 15 along with Rescue 36 were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident on Route 26 South on Thursday evening at 19:00 hours. Rescue Lieutenant 35-2 arrived on scene to find a late model Pontiac on its roof. The driver had self extricated and refused treatment after being assessed by 15’s EMS personnel. Rescue 35’s crew performed hazard control and cleared the highway. The call ended at 19:50 hours.

 


REPORTED DWELLING FIRE IN ENTRIKEN

 

Nov 7th - A full house response from 35 was due on a first alarm assignment with Company 3 for a dwelling fire off Route 994 near Entriken on Friday evening. Deputy Chief 3 riding in on Engine 3 arrived on scene with normal conditions on the reported kitchen fire. He ordered all incoming apparatus to stage on Route 994. Upon his investigation he found the fire to be out. Company 3 was held to ventilate the dwelling and Deputy Chief 3 placed the remainder of the box in service. All Company 35 apparatus were back in quarters and ready at 18:37 hours.

 


RESCUE 35 DUE ON THE 3-6 BOX WITH CO.3

 

Nov 7th - Company 3 and Rescue 35 were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident on Raystown Road in Lincoln Township on Friday at 16:00 hours. Deputy Chief 3 arrived on scene with no entrapment and placed Rescue 35 available while enroute to the call. Rescue 35 arrived back in station at 16:23 hours.

 


AUTOMATIC ALARM AT TUSSEY MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL

 

Nov 6th - All companies due on the 35-01 box were dispatched for a general alarm at Tussey Mountain High School on Thursday at 16:44 hours. Chief 35 & Marshal 35 went on scene with normal conditions. No alarms were sounding within the school. School personnel advised that a total alarm system was performed about ½ hour prior to the call. The fire company investigation found nothing. The alarm company was called and the system was restored.

The box was placed back in service at 17:22.

 


WORKING APARTMENT FIRE ON MAIN STREET

IN SAXTON BOROUGH

 

Nov 3rd - The Bedford County 911 Center went straight to a second alarm assignment on the 35 - 01 box at 19:13 hours on Monday evening for an apartment fire on Main Street in Saxton. Chief 35 arrived on scene and assumed command of a working fire in a second floor apartment above the OIP Restaurant. Heavy fire and smoke were evident from the ‘D’ side windows. residents were able to escape to safety but were attempting to re-enter the structure to rescue their cats. Chief 35 had them clear the balcony away from the fire-ground operations calming them with a promise to try and save their cats.

Engine 35 laid a supply line in from the hydrant at 8th & Main and stationed at the ‘A’/’D’ corner. The engine crew stretched two 1&3/4 attack lines up a ladder raised to the second floor balcony and advanced through the apartment door on the ‘D’ side for the interior attack. The crew made a rapid and successful knockdown of the fire. Deputy Chief 35 radioed Command 35 of fire under control within minutes of the initial attack and assumed Division 2 Officer. Assistant 35-2 was designated as the Operations Officer and coordinated the actions of the staffing from the multiple companies on the alarm. Hydraulic ventilation was initiated by the engine company while the truck company opened up and performed overhaul operations. A salvage crew was assigned to cover the equipment in the restaurant on the first floor. Wagon 36 with Chief 36 was stationed on the ‘A’ side after laying in from 7th & Main serving as a secondary water supply. Rescue 36 provided scene lighting from Main Street. Rescue 35 and Truck 35 were set up on the ‘B’ Side and Department 5 staged at the command post for RIT. All other apparatus was staged in the Dollar General Parking lot with the exception of Engine 32 and Tanker 41 who were staged at 9th and Main and given the stand by assignment.

The quick and effective actions of the crews working the job resulted in containment of the fire to only the apartment of origin. There was only minor smoke damage to the adjacent apartment and minimal water damage to the restaurant below. The OIP is open for business today as normal. The cats were all rescued and returned to their owner in good condition. The incident was terminated at 20:41 hours and all apparatus was back in quarters and ready at 21:02 hours. A PA State Fire Marshal was on the scene Tuesday to investigate the cause of the fire. 

 

 

 


CAR IN THE CREEK IN COALMONT BOROUGH

 

Nov 3rd - Company 35 and Ambulance 15 were dispatched for an early morning motor vehicle accident involving a car into a creek in Coalmont early Monday morning. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find the driver had self extricated and climbed out of the water with no apparent injuries. Rescue 35 crew performed fluid containment and provided lighting for the towing service while the car was removed from the creek.  Chief placed the box back in service at 06:21 hours.

 

 

 


RESCUE 35 TRANSFERS TO HUNTINGDON

 

Nov 2nd - Rescue 35 transferred into Station 5 in Huntingdon to handle alarms while Department 5 and other first due companies were battling an apartment fire on the 5-5 Box. No calls were received and Rescue 35 was placed back into service at 21:18 hours.

 


WIRES ON FIRE ALARM IN SAXTON BOROUGH

COULD HAVE BEEN DEADLY

 

Nov 2nd - Company 35 was dispatched for wires on fire near 1000 6th Street just after midnight on Sunday. Chief 35 and other officers on scene discovered the wires burning and during the investigation a near miss occurred when a 20lb propane cylinder in a burning barrel under the wires llit off. The burning gas sent flames 20 feet into the air causing further damage to the telephone lines already on fire. Chief 35 discovered that someone had deliberately moved a burning barrel from its original location to nearby structure, ignited the contents and placed the propane cylinder in the barrel with an obvious intent to cause destruction. Local Police were called to the scene and their investigation is continuing.

 


RIT CALL WITH COMPANY41

 

Nov 1st - Company 35 RIT team was dispatched to a Structure Fire with Company 41 on Saturday morning. Chief 41 went on scene and determined RIT services not required and placed the team back in service at 07:27 hours.

 


RESCUE ASSIST WITH STATION 36

 

Nov 1st - Station 35 and Rescue 35 were dispatched for a rollover near the Coke Ovens on Six Mile Run Road early Saturday morning. 36 officers arrived on scene to find no entrapment and placed Rescue 35 available at 03:12 hours.

 


CO.35 DISPATCHED FOR POSSIBLE HOUSE FIRE

IN HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP

 

Oct 31st - The 3-6 Box was dispatched at 9:50 hours on Friday for a Structure Fire in Hopewell Township. The Huntingdon County 911 Center went direct with Chief 3 reporting the alarm company had called in reporting this to be a false alarm. Chief 3 held all apparatus on the box in station until he investigated. He verified the false activation and placed all units available at 10:00 hours.

 


EARLY MORNING ROOM & CONTENTS FIRE

ON THE 3-6 BOX

 

Oct 28th - A full first alarm assignment was dispatched on the 3-6 Box in Cherry Town for a house fire early Tuesday morning. Lieutenant 3 arrived on scene reporting a fire in the living room of the dwelling. Engine 3 & 35 arrived on scene together and their combined crews made a quick interior attack on the fire containing it to the living room area. Hydraulic ventilation was initiated immediately after extinguishment followed up with positive pressure to clear the structure. The walls were opened to check for extension with nothing found. The attack was supported by Truck 35, Squad 6 and Tankers 3 & 35 on scene with the remainder of the apparatus on the box staged on Route 26.  Chief 3 placed the box back in service at 04:33 hours.

 


RESCUE 35 and FIRE POLICE CALLED FOR TRAFFIC

CONTROL ON ROUTE 164

 

Oct 25th - Rescue 35 along and the 35 Fire Police unit were called for a traffic control assignment on Route 164 on Saturday evening at 22:26 hours. A car broke down on the way up the mountain blocking one lay of traffic. Rescue Captain 35- 2 placed Rescue 35 in service and left Fire Police control traffic until the towing service arrived and removed the vehicle. The call ended at 22:44 hours.

FIRE PREVENTION COLORING & DRAWING CONTEST

 

Oct 25th - From Left to Right front: Engine Sergeant Brian Wills, Katie Ness – Mrs. Rupert’s 2nd Grade, Kayla Storm – Mrs. Clapper’s Afternoon Pre-School, Chloe Soliday – Miss Brown’s 4th Grade and Fire Police Lieutenant Wayne Hammond, 2008 Fire Prevention Coordinator. Each student received a $50.00 Savings Bond and stuffed animal from the Fire Company, as well as being taken for a ride on the Rescue Truck. The students said the ride was fun. All of the entries from the contest will be posted on the entrance way wall at the Saxton Market.

 

 


TANKER 35 TRANSFERS TO STA.10 in SMITHFIELD

 

Oct 18th - A major fire in Mifflin County involving eight structures early Saturday morning summoned almost all the Tankers from Huntingdon County. Tanker 35 was transferred into Smithfield, a central location to cover tanker assignments for most of the county. The stand-by assignment was handled by Captain 35-3 and a crew of four. No calls were received. They returned to station at 03:06 hours.

 


CAR FIRE ON ROUTE 164

 

Oct 14th - Company 35 and Ambulance 15 were dispatched for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident on Route 164 Tuesday evening. Medic 15-1 was first to arrive on scene and radioed responding units that they were rolling into a working car fire not an accident. Rescue 35 with Deputy Chief 35 and a staffing of 7 arrived to find an engine compartment fire. The crew went to work using two 1 & ¾ inch hand lines and had the fire extinguished within minutes. Deputy Chief 35 placed the box back in service at 21:43 hours.

 

 

 


TIGER CUB SCOUTS VISIT STATION 35

 

Oct 14th - Officers of Company 35 hosted a special group of Cub Scouts to the Firehouse on Tuesday evening. The Deputy Chief, Engine Captain, Rescue Captain, Rescue Lieutenant & Chief Engineer all helped with the station tour. The Tiger Cubs were shown the interesting things a firefighter does including all the apparatus and equipment they use to do their job in helping to save lives. They were also given a demonstration on how the firefighters are dispatched with a pager activation by the Bedford County 911 Center. Some important fire safety lessons were reinforced and they got to try on some turnout gear. Then the Scouts were given a ride around town on Rescue 35. We thank the Tiger Scouts and their Scout master for visiting us and look forward to some of them becoming future firefighters!

 

 

 


ANIMAL RESCUE IN HOPEWELL TWP.

 

Oct 14th - Rescue 35 and Ambulance 15 were dispatched for an animal rescue on Upper Ridge Road in Hopewell Township on Tuesday morning. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find a small dog trapped underneath the concrete porch of an abandoned house creating a challenging rescue operation. The Rescue crew under the direction of Captain 35-2 utilized hydraulic rescue tools and jacks to raise the 8 inch concrete slab. The operation also required cutting a hole in the floor on the interior of the house so the team could get below grade to verify the location and condition of the dog. A quick encounter with a ground hog during the operations made things a little exciting and it is expected this creature is what led to the dog’s original confinement. Once the slab was lifted and dirt removed from underneath the house, the dog was able to get free and Sergeant 35-1eventually coaxed her to the opening made in the floor inside the house. Bonnie, the 14 pound Daschound appeared to be scared but otherwise fine as she was turned over to her very grateful owners. The call ended at 11:42 hours.

ASSIST CO.36 ON MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

 

Oct 12th - Company 36, Ambulance 16 and Rescue 35 were dispatched on the 36-03 Box for a serious Motor Vehicle Accident on Route 26 near Hopewell on Sunday at 16:27 hours. Chief 36 assigned Rescue 35 to establish a landing zone at the Hopewell Ball Field. Deputy Chief 35 assumed LZ Officer while directing his Rescue 35 crew to set up the landing zone for Medi-Vac 11. Ambulance 15 was special called to provide care and transport of an additional patient from the scene to Bedford Memorial. Rescue 35 was back in quarters at 17:31 hours.

 


RESCUE TRANSFER TO HUNTINGDON

 

Oct 11th - An automatic alarm at the DeForest Apartments in Huntingdon Borough came in on Saturday with Rescue 35 due on the box to transfer to Station 5. Chief 5 arrived at the apartments and found nothing and placed the box available just as the Rescue 35 was marking up on the air at 14:27 hours.

 


SMOKE & ODOR AT 724 MAIN

 

Oct 11th - Company 35 was dispatched for a smoke and odor investigation at 724 Main Street in Saxton Borough at 00:36 hours on Saturday. caller reported someone throwing something in the door or window of their apartment making the residents sick. Chief 35 arrived on scene with normal conditions. The apartment tenant met Chief 35 and advised him they had discovered that an unknown person opened their apartment door and discharged a fire extinguisher all thought their unit. Assistant Chief 35- 2 investigated and confirmed that dry chemical was spread throughout the apartment. Normal window ventilation was all that was required. Saxton PD arrived on scene to investigate the break in and discharge of the extinguisher. Chief 35 placed the box back in service at 00:51 hours.

 


ANOTHER ALARM AT SETON

 

Oct 9th - The full 35 -01 box was dispatched for an automatic alarm at Seton Company at 05:24 hours this morning. Tense moments occurred for 35 officers and firefighters initially as reports from the 911 Center said that a pull station had been activated. Chief 35 arrived on scene and was advised that a broken water line had allowed water to run down on the pull station at the door in one of the loading dock areas triggering the alarm. Chief 35 held Company 35 units on scene during the verification process and placed the remainder of the apparatus on the box available. The call ended at 05:52 hours.

SMOKE AT SETON COMPANY

 

Oct 6th - Company 35 was dispatched at 22.37 hours Monday evening for a smoke condition in the Finishing Plant at Seton. The box was held as a local alarm by Chief 35 since no alarms were activated at the facility, handling the call as an investigation only. Seton’s maintenance supervisor notified the 911 center to have the fire department dispatched to assist with the trying to locate the origin of a light smoke and odor condition. Company 35 officers & firefighters investigated the cause performing a complete walk through including thermal imaging readings on all electrical, mechanical and HVAC systems and found nothing. The cause was believed to be related to the start up of a heating unit.  All responding units were back in service at 23:17 hours.

 


MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT AT

NORRIS STREET & SAXTON ROAD

 

Oct 5th - Company 35, Ambulance 15 & Rescue 36 were dispatched for a two car accident at Norris Street & Saxton Road on Sunday afternoon at 15:51 hours. Lieutenant 35-2 heard the crash from his residence and was the first officer to arrive on scene to find a relatively minor accident. Lt. 35-2 placed Rescue 36 available and had Rescue 35 come into the scene to handle scene safety during patient assessment. No patients required transport. All units were back in quarters and available at 16:33 hours.

 

 


TWO ON TUESDAY AT TMHS

 

Sept 30th - Ambulance 15 along with Medic 17 were dispatched for a burn victim following a construction accident at the Tussey Mountain High School on Tuesday. The severity of the burns was determined to warrant aero medical transport. Engine 35 was dispatched to establish a landing zone at 17:05 hours. Stat Medivac arrived, assessed the patient and transported the patient to the burn center in Pittsburgh in lieu of the Altoona Trauma Center. The call ended at 17:55 hours.

 

About an hour later the Bedford 911 Center dispatched a full first alarm assignment on the 35-01 box Tuesday evening at 19:08 hours for an automatic alarm at Tussey Mountain High School. Chief 35 arrived on scene with normal conditions and was quickly advised by school officials of the false activation of a pull station during a volley ball game. The alarm system was reset and all apparatus due on the box were placed back in service at 19:13 hours.

 

 

 


ROLL-OVER ON THE 3-6 BOX IN CHERRYTOWN

 

Sept 27th - Company 3, along with Rescue 35 and Ambulance 15 responded to a serious auto accident near the Baker Farm on Raystown Road in Cherrytown Saturday night at 19:07 hours. The vehicle went air borne over an embankment and rolled before landing in a field. The driver was found outside the vehicle by first arriving units. Lieutenant 3 assumed command and brought Rescue 35 under the direction of Captain 35-2 into the scene along with Company 3 apparatus. The condition of the patient and mechanism of injury warranted aero medical transport to the trauma center so LT-3 assigned Tanker 35’s crew to establish a landing zone but it was later determined the medical helicopters were grounded due to weather conditions canceling the fly out. The patient was then transported to the hospital by Ambulance 15. All 35 apparatus were back in service at 20:52 hours.

 


ANOTHER MVA AT WILDCAT ROCKS

 

Sept 26th - Company 35, Rescue 17 & Ambulance 15 were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident at Wildcat Rocks on Friday evening at 22:22 hours. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find an SUV on its side. The driver had self extricated and fled the scene prior to the arrival of Company 35 units. Rescue 17 and Ambulance 15 were placed available and Rescue 35 crew was assigned to scene safety. Chief 35 determined the scene controlled, placed Rescue 35 in service and transferred command to Fire Police Captain 35 who was assigned to traffic control until the arrival of Pa State Police. All 35 units were in quarters and ready at 22:54 hours.

 

 

 


AUTOMATIC ALARM IN THE BOROUGH OF HUNTINGDON

 

Sept 25th - Company 35 was dispatched to assist Department 5 for an automatic fire alarm at the Deforest Apartments in Huntingdon Thursday evening. Chief 5 placed the 5 Box back in service before units were on the street. Assistant Chief 35 -2 reported Station 35 ready for service at 19:49 hours.

 


MVA IN SAXTON BOROUGH

 

Sept 22nd - At 13:15 hours on Monday Company 35, Ambulance 15 & Rescue 36 were dispatched for a two vehicle accident at the intersection of 8th & Main Streets in Saxton. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find the vehicles moved safely off the road way and all occupants out of the two cars involved. Chief 35 placed Rescue 36 in service and Rescue 35 and Fire Police units were held on scene while EMS 15 personnel assessed the patients and Saxton PD investigated the accident. The call was terminated at 14:07 hours.

 


TRUCK ON ITS SIDE ON 913

 

Sept 20th - Rescue 35 and Ambulance 15 were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident on Route 913 near Wildcat Rocks at 20:04 hours on Saturday night. Deputy Chief 35 with Rescue 35 arrived on scene to find a pickup on it side. The driver was out of the vehicle and exhibiting no injuries. The rescue crew performed scene safety and debris removal. Deputy 35 released 35 units at 20:42 hours and turned the scene over to Fire Police Captain 35 and his crew for traffic control until the arrival of Pa State Police who were tied up on another incident. The Fire Police Units were cleared at 21:52 hours.

 


SAXTON OFFICERS HAVE QUIET DAY WHILE

MANNING TRUCK 1 IN THE BOROUGH OF CHAMBERSBURG

 

Sept 20th - At 08:00 Assistant Chief McClure, Captain Smith, Chief Engineer Weimer and Sergeant Wills arrived to handle a stand by assignment during the Franklin Fire Company Gun Bash on Saturday. The crew was assigned to Truck 1 which was covering all of Chambersburg Borough and the Franklin's area for the entire day but unfortunately didn’t turn a wheel.

 

 

 


CAR SLAMS ROCKS ON MOUNTAIN

 

Sept 19th - Company 35 was dispatched for a motor vehicle accident near the top of the mountain on Route 164 on Friday afternoon at 13:47 hours. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find one car blocking the highway with heavy front end damage after striking the rock embankment. One person was still in the vehicle with air bag deployment. Further assessment determined no confinement and minor injuries to the occupant. Rescue 35 arrived on scene and handled scene safety and fluid control. Ambulance 15 transported the patient to Nason Hospital in Roaring Springs. 35 Fire police were assigned to traffic control. The scene was cleared and incident terminated at 14:44 hours.  35 units were back in quarters at 14:57 hours.

 


STRUCTURE FIRE WITH 17

 

Sept 16th - Company 35 was dispatched with other first due companies on the 17 - 5 Box in Eagle Foundry at 04:37 hours Tuesday morning for a reported building fire. Early reports from the dispatch center had the building as well off. Chief 17 arrived on scene and found the wood structure fully involved. He assumed command and ordered a defensive attack by the first arriving 17, 21and 35 units. He also requested a fill site and tanker shuttle operation to supply water to the scene for complete extinguishment of the structure that was used primarily as a summer home and hunting camp.

Units were on scene for several hours. All Company 35 apparatus was back in quarters and ready at 08:00 hours.

 


AUTOMATIC ALARM AT SETON

 

Sept 14th - The 35-01 box was dispatched for an Automatic Alarm at Seton Company at 04:01hours, Marshall 35 & Chief 35 arrived on the scene with normal conditions. 35 apparatus was held on scene during the investigation and the remainder of the box was placed back in service. The alarm system, showing smoke detector activation in an air handing unit was found to be false upon investigation. The alarms system was restored and 35 units were returned to quarters at 04:52 hours.

 


MVA IN COALMONT - VEHICLE LEAVES SCENE

 

Sept 13th - At 23:49 hours Company 35 & Rescue 17 were dispatched for an MVA in Coalmont. Shortly after Chief 35 went on the air, the dispatch center radioed that callers were reporting the vehicle involved in the crash had fled the scene. All units were held in quarters while Chief 35 confirmed the scene was safe and clear. Chief 35 arrived on the scene minutes later and found that the vehicle involved had left the scene after leaving the highway and striking the stone porch of a house, and placed the box back in service.

 


MVA WITH 17

 

Sept 13th - Company 17 and Rescue 35 were dispatched for an MVA on Route 913 at 11:58 hours. Assistant Chief 17 arrived on scene with no confinement and placed Rescue 35 available before leaving the station.

 


BOATS ON FIRE AT LAKE RAYSTOWN RESORT MARINA

 

Sept 9th - Huntingdon County Station 3 was dispatched on a local alarm for a house boat on fire at the Lake Raystown Resort Marina just after 1900 hours Thursday evening. Chief 3 knowing the close proximity of the boats at the marina and the likelihood of exposure problems, wisely requested Huntingdon County 911 to upgrade the box to a full first alarm assignment shortly after marking up on the air. Chief 35, Engine 35 & Tanker 35 arrived on scene shortly after Station 3 apparatus to find two large 35’ & 40’  house boats well off with flames impinging on several other boats tied to the dock. Flames were in excess of 40 feet high above the fire scene. Chief 3 assumed command, Engine 3s crew assisted by Deputy Chief 35 and his Engine 35 crew made the initial attack, Chief 3 assigned Chief 35 to establish a water supply. Engine 35 was set at draft at the boat launch and supplied Engine 3, the attack engine via 5” LDH. Tanker 6 was set at nurse to Engine 35 at the draft site as a backup. Tankers 3, 35, 21 & 17 were staged as secondary water supplies for Engine 3. All other apparatus on the box was placed in level two staging under staging officer Chief 36. Manpower from the staged rigs was assigned to assist with fire attack and overhaul. Some rigs were later released to man empty stations. Huntingdon County EMA arrived on scene to assist with control & containment of any dispersed fuels. In all 4 boats and one jet ski were destroyed or damaged resulting in an estimated $500,000 loss. Engine 35 was released from the scene after three hours on the job and was back in quarters and ready at 2237 hours. Tanker 35 was held on scene along with other apparatus well into the early morning hours.

 

 

 


MVA AT ROUTE 26 & 164

 

Sept 9th - Company 35 units were dispatched for an MVA at the intersection on Route 26 & 164. Reports from the 911 center were no reported injuries on scene and only traffic control needed. Chief 35 arrived on the scene to find the highway had been cleared and the affected vehicles had left the scene. He immediately placed the box back into service at 12:10 hours.

 


EVENING MVA

 

Sept 4th - At 17:30 Company 35 was alerted to an MVA by Stoudnour's car wash. Chief 35, Rescue 35, and Tanker 35 responded. Chief 35 arrived on scene to find a 2-vehicle accident at the intersection of route 913 and 16th street, one vehicle was in the roadway on 16th street and the other vehicle was on the guardrails along route 913. Both patients were self extricated with no injuries. Company 35 secured the scene and controlled traffic until PSP arrived. Company 35 was back in service at 19:09.

 

 

 


AFA AT THE HOPEWELL VILLAGE APARTMENTS

WITH SMOKE SHOWING

 

Sept 1st - Company 35 & 36 along with other apparatus due on the 36-03 box were dispatched for an automatic fire alarm at the Hopewell Village Apartments on Sunday at 14:07. Responding units were alerted by the Bedford 911 Center that calls from the apartment building were reporting a fire in Apartment 2. Assistant 36 -2 arrived on the scene and reported smoke showing. Engine 36 crew upon entry found a fire on top of the stove and made immediate extinguishment and ventilated the apartment. Engine 35, Truck 35, Rescue 35 and Tanker 35 were placed in service upon their arrival along with the other responding mutual aid apparatus. All 35 apparatus were back in quarters and ready at 14:28 hours.

 


MVA ON RAYSTOWN ROAD

 

Aug 31st - Company 36 & Rescue 35 were dispatched for a motor vehicle accident on Raystown Road, just south of the Hopewell Bridge on Saturday at 17:52 hours. Deputy 36 went on scene with no confinement and Rescue 35 was cancelled in route.

 


AUTOMATIC ALARM AT HOPEWELL VILLAGE APARTMENTS

 

Aug 28th - Company 36 & 35 along with other apparatus due on the 36-03 box were dispatched for an automatic fire alarm at the Hopewell Village Apartments at 11:21 on Thursday. The box was placed in service by Bedford County 911 at the same time units were starting to mark up on the air. Apparently the alarm company was on premise running tests without notification to the 911 Center.

 


TRUCK TAKES DOWN TREE AND

BLOCKS LIBERTY STREET

 

Aug 28th - At 07:42 Rescue Captain 35-2 happened on the scene of a large tree down on Liberty Street.  He radioed Bedford County 911 for a special response from Rescue 35 for tree removal and traffic control. A tractor and trailer headed to the industrial park took a wrong turn onto one the streets restricted to trucks and clipped a tree bringing down a large potion of it and closing the 1400 block of Liberty Street.  Rescue 35 personnel removed the tree utilizing power saws and the box was placed back in service at 08:11 hours.

 


CONDOLENCES!

 

Aug 27th - The Saxton Fire Company is sad to announce that Brother Firefighter & EMT Ray Miller has died following a fourteen month battle with cancer. A Fire Company memorial service will be held on Thursday August 28th at Akers Funeral Home. All members are requested to meet in full dress uniform on station at 18:30 hours. We will then travel together to the service to be conducted at 1900 hours. Our deepest sympathies go out to Ray's family and friends.

 


CPR RECERTIFICATION CLASSES CONDUCTED BY

MEMBERS OF THE SAXTON EMS TEAM

 

Aug 25th - An American Heart BLS/Healthcare Provider Class was held two evenings last week. We had a total of 24 people attend the two sessions.  Ten on Thursday evening and fourteen on Sunday evening. In addition to demonstrating the required skills necessary to recertify in the American Heart class, all of the students participated in practice stations on suction, insertion of oral pharyngeal airways, and oxygen use during CPR. How to use an AED is part of the BLS/Healthcare Provider class curriculum, and the students used two types of demonstrator AED's to update those skills. We also took time refreshing our knowledge on the use of the actual AED's we have in service. The newest procedures for opening a foreign body obstructed airway were reviewed. All students passed the required written examination. The courses were conducted by our in-house instructor Patricia Carnell. We all thank her for all her ongoing efforts in keeping our certifications current and our skills sharp!

Aug 23rd - Engine 35 with a staffing of 7 covered calls for Cassandra Fire Department on Saturday during the wedding and reception of Matt & Lindsey McCoy. While it was a quiet day in Cassandra, 35 was honored to be able to man Station 81 so that Matt & Lindsey and the rest of the members from the 81 house could enjoy this very special day.

ELECTRICAL WIRES ON TOP OF A CEMENT TRUCK

 

Aug 22nd - Company 35 was dispatched at 13:16 hours for electrical wires down on a cement truck on Manspeaker Road. Initial reports from the 911 Center had the driver still in the vehicle with the wires arcing on the truck. Chief 35 arrived on scene along with Rescue 35 & Tanker 35 to find the wires cleared from the vehicle and the driver out and OK. The lines were still energized so Chief 35 ordered Fire Police units to close Manspeaker Road. The power company was notified by the 911 Center at the time of the call. They arrived about 15 minutes into the incident and de-energized the lines and removed them from the highway. The incident was terminated at 13:56 hours.

Aug 22nd - At 03:10 the crew from Ambulance 15 responded to a call for a fall patient on Shoup Branch Road. Shortly after arriving on scene they requested a special call for Rescue 35 for a lift assist.

Aug 18th - Company 35 Fire Police were called to the scene of a minor MVA on Route 26 by Chief 36 to assist with traffic control on Monday shortly after 16:00 hours. FP LT 35-3 & FP LT 35-4 along with other members completed the assignment.

 


AUTOMATIC FIRE ALARM AT RAVEN RUN CHURCH

 

Aug 18th - The 35-03 Box was dispatched for an automatic fire alarm at the Raven Run Church of the Brethren on Saturday at 13:48 hours. Fire Marshal 35 arrived on scene with normal conditions. Engine 35 was held on scene during the investigation of the alarm and the remainder of the box was placed in service. A false activation was ruled, alarms were restored and the incident was terminated at 14:26 hours.

 

 


Co.36 & 35 WORK MVA WITH CONFINEMENT IN HOPEWELL

 

Aug 15th - At 15:21 hours Company 36 and Ambulance 16 along with Rescue 35 and Ambulance 15 were dispatched on the 36-03 box for a motor vehicle accident in Hopewell. Rescue Captain 36-4 arrived on scene with a car broadsided into a group of trees, down an embankment with one patient trapped. He assumed command and assigned Chief 35 as the Operations officer and Medic 15 was the EMS officer. Both 36 & 35 rescue teams utilized their hydraulic rescue systems working both sides of the vehicle simultaneously to perform roof and door removal operations to free the patient. Medic 15-2 requested Aero medical so Command 36 dispatched Wagon 36 for the assignment. Chief 36 arrived with Wagon 36 and assumed LZ Officer. Extrication was completed and patient was flown to Altoona Regional Trauma Center by Stat Medivac.

 

 

 


SAXTON EMS STRIKE TEAM MEMBERS ATTEND

STATEWIDE EXERCISE AT FORT INDIANTOWN GAPP

 

Aug 12th & 13th - 9 members from the Saxton EMS Region 09 Strike Team were among nearly 300 participants in a two day statewide training exercise at Fort Indiantown Gap on August 12 &13. The readiness exercise was used to make everyone aware of all the different assets and resources available from each of the 14 EMS Strike Teams throughout the Statewide EMS system. Surge Hospitals, Rehab Trailers, Canteens, Communication Systems and numerous Special Operations and Equipment caches were set up to show the capabilities available should the Strike Teams be deployed to a major incident. PA EMA and other high ranking officials visited the compound on Tuesday to view first hand the extensive capabilities of the different regional Strike Teams. The Saxton team enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow Region 09 Strike team members from Hustontown, McConnellsburg, Ebensburg, Conemaugh and AMED during the two day exercise.

 

 

 

 


ENGINE 35 GETS HIT FOR WORKING DWELLING

FIRE ON THE 12-10 BOX

 

Aug 10th - Engine 35 and crew were returning to the station from the garage fire when they got hit out for a working dwelling fire at 21577 Old School Baptist Road near Three Springs. Initial arriving units got a quick hit on the fire and contained it primarily to the first floor. Engine 35’s crew working under the direction of Captain 35-3 was assigned to salvage and overhaul operations upon their arrival. Chief 12 placed Engine 35 available at 07:06 and they were back in quarters and ready at 07:58 after a busy Sunday morning.

 


COMPANY 35 ASSISTS STATION 17 WITH

WORKING GARAGE FIRE

 

Aug 10th - A full house from 35 was dispatched to a working garage fire early Sunday on the 17- 06 box on the Coles Valley Road. Chief 17 assumed command and found the large garage with several vehicles inside to be well off upon arrival. Engine 35 and crew under the direction of Assistant 35-3 and Captain 35-3 assisted 17 firefighters with the attack, Rescue 35 was assigned to light tower and cascade operations and Tanker 35 supplied water to the attack engines.

 


CREWS TAKE IN THREE RUNS

 

Aug 5th - Company 35 was called for an MVA at the intersections of Routes 164 and 26 at 09:38 this morning. Chief 35, Rescue 35 and Ambulance 15-1 responded to find a vehicle that had run into the back of a log truck stopped for a stop sign. Co.35 did fluid clean-up and traffic control until PSP arrived. While on scene Rescue 35 was called to assist Huntingdon County Co.3 and 21 with an extrication from an ATV accident. While enroute, Rescue 35 was re-assigned to set up a landing zone for an inbound medical helicopter. Rescue 35 set up a landing zone for STAT MedEvac 11 in a field below the accident and provided scene safety, Co.35 was back in service at 11:02. At 11:05, Company 35 was called to assist Company 36 with a garage fire with possible extension into a house. Rescue, Engine, Tanker and Chief 35 arrived on scene to find the structure on the ground with no extension and assisted with overhaul operations. Co.35 returned to service at 11:57.

EARLY MORNING CRASH

 

Aug 3rd - At 03:57, Company 35 was alerted for an MVA on Route 913 in the area of the Midway Bar. Rescue 35 and Chief 35 responded, Chief 35 arrived on scene to find a truck that had struck a utility pole, but no occupants around. Company 35 Fire Police remained on scene until State police arrived.

July 23rd - EMS 16 and Rescue 36 along with automatic mutual aid response from Rescue 35 were dispatched for an MVA on Route 915 above Hopewell at 14:14. Lieutenant 36 went on scene with minor injuries and no entrapment and placed Rescue 35 available at 14:29.

 


POWER OUTAGE TRIGGERS SETON ALARM

 

July 23rd - The 35-01 Box was dispatched for an automatic alarm at the Seton Company this morning. Chief 35 arrived on scene and found a brief power outage to have caused the alarm. The system was reset and the Box was placed back in service at 05:49.

 


EARLY MORNING FLY-OUT

 

July 22nd - EMS 15 was dispatched for an early morning ALS response to 714 Main Street for an unresponsive male patient who had fallen down numerous flights of stairs. Medic 15-4 went on scene and found a patient to be exhibiting serious traumatic injuries and requested Aero Medical response. Engine 35 was the dispatched at 04:27 to establish a landing zone for STAT MedEvac 11. Lt 35-1 assumed landing zone officer responsibilities at the Seton Company. The patient was air lifted to Altoona Hospital Regional Trauma Center at 05:11, Lt 35-1 placed the box in service at 05:13.

 


OUR CONDOLENCES!

 

July 21st - We are saddened by the sudden death of Life Member Ellis Bollinger who died of an apparent heart attack resulting in a motor vehicle accident on Route 164 near the county line on Friday, July 18. Our deepest sympathies along with our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. All members are urged to meet at the station on Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. in dress uniforms. We will then go to the Curtis Heath Funeral Home in Broad Top where we will conduct a memorial service to honor Ellis ‘Bob’ Bollinger’s service to our company.

 


35 ASSISTS BLAIR COUNTY COMPANY 80

 

July 9th-12th - Rescue 35 & Fire Police were dispatched at 9:49 this morning to close down Route 164 assisting Blair County Company 80 while they were handling a vehicle fire on their side of the mountain. Assistant Chief 35-2 place re-opened the highway and place the box back in service at 10:34. Ambulance 15 was hit out for a medical emergency at the same time making it a busy morning following a scary quiet week!

 


SAXTON HAS STRONG SHOWING AT HUNTINGDON

COUNTY CONVENTION IN PETERSBURG

 

July 9th-12th - More than 50 members of the Saxton Fire & EMS team and their families swarmed Petersburg during the week long Huntingdon County Convention last week. Teams competed in all of the Fire & EMS contests and pulled off 1st Place victory in the EMS Load & Go contest! The team scored a great time thanks to the speed of our Junior Firefighters.

 

 

 

Saxton apparatus scored big during the parade judging. Engine 35 and Engine-Tanker 35 were both awarded 1st Place for best equipped and maintained apparatus in their categories. Rescue 35 received a disappointing 2nd Place although it received the Most Outstanding Apparatus Award so...??? Ambulance 15 also won 3rd Place in the BLS division making it a clean sweep for all our apparatus placing among the best in the parade. An awesome 35 showing.

 

   

 

Unfortunately Truck 35 missed its last convention due to mechanical problems but members sported a commemorative “Farewell Tour” shirt on Friday night to pay tribute to its many years of distinguished service.

All of this made it a great convention but then following the apparatus awards ceremony it got even better. Two of our Company 35 Captains were awarded the coveted Huntingdon County Firefighter of the Year Award.  Engine Captain Heidi Pawuk and Rescue Captain Steve Brumbaugh were both recognized for their significant fire service accomplishments and were first time co-award winners of this prestigious recognition presented to them in front of a large number of their fire service peers. Our congratulations to both of them for all their accomplishments!

 

 


LIFETIME MEMBER PASSES

 

July 7th - The Saxton Volunteer Fire Company is deeply saddened by the loss of long time Life Member and Charter Fire Police Member Guy "Nook" Giornest. He died on Friday, July 4th at Nason Hospital in Roaring Springs at the age of 79.

 

All members are requested to meet at the station on Tuesday at 6:00 pm in full dress uniform, We will then go to the Curtis Heath Funeral Home in Broad Top where we will conduct a memorial service and pay tribute to 'Nook' for his services to our company.

 


AFA AT SETON PLANT

 

July 5th - Company 35 was alerted at 17:05 for an AFA at the Seton Plant in Saxton. Fire Marshall 35 responded to the scene while the remainder f the company held in station. Fire Marshall 35 reset the alarm and the box was placed back in service.

 


FIRE AT THE HUNTINGDON HOSPITAL

 

July 4th - At 12:04 Huntingdon County came on the air with a structure fire at the Huntingdon Hospital. Engine 35 was called to the scene, but was cancelled enroute. Truck 35 was also called, but it was Out Of Service.

 


SCARY CALL ENDS WITH HAPPY ENDING!

 

July 1st - At 14:25 Company 35 and EMS 15 were dispatched to the Station to assist PA State Police with the search of a 15 year old boy missing from his home on Mifflin Street. Parents reported the boy was missing 3.5 hours before Emergency Services was notified and other pertinent information provided increased the urgency of the response. Fire Marshal 35 assumed Command and established the Command post at Station 35. He divided the 31 responding personnel into teams with specific grid search assignments throughout the immediate Saxton, Stonerstown, East Saxton and Puttstown areas. PSP continued drive around searches and the PSP helicopter was also utilized. The boy was located approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes into the call by PA State Police along Shoup Street, he was brought to the Station and found to be in good condition and required no EMS services. The Ladies of the Fire Company Organization provided Rehab refreshments. Marshal 35 terminated the call at 17:14.

 


TRAINING EXERCISE AT H.A.C.C.

 

June 28th - 14 members of the Saxton Technical Rescue Team now part of the Pennsylvania Squad 3 USAR Team attended a special training exercise at the Harrisburg Area Community College on Saturday morning. The exercise was handled as a true incident with the team being dispatched by the Bedford County 911 Center at 6:15 a.m. The team assembled, checked their equipment list and went through their medical evaluations according to team protocol. Rescue 35 with the Technical Rescue Trailer traveled to Carlisle where they met the Squad 3 USAR units and then convoyed to Harrisburg. Upon arrival the team was given their instructions on the simulated incident. Crews worked to set up the Command post, establish site communications and stage equipment prior to going to work. The crews worked all day on Tech Search, breeching, breaking, cutting, shoring, confined space entry, patient extrication and numerous other technical rescue skills during the event. It was a great day!
 

The Saxton Team would like to thank Chief Gary Dennis, USAR team leader and his entire Squad 3 team along with Randy Padfield from the Harrisburg Area Community College for making this great training.
 

 

 


NO INJURIES ON ROUTE 26 MVA

 

June 27th - At 09:06 Company 35 was called for an MVA on Route 26. Chief 35, Rescue 35, Unit 15 and Rescue 36 arrived on scene to find two vehicles blocking one lane of travel with all occupants out uninjured.
